HIANZ Life Member Awards 2024

Tom Kimber

Life Member Award 2024

Tom Kimber from Kennards Hire was awarded Life Membership at the HIRECON24 Hire Excellence Awards. We were delighted to have to have Tom’s wife Mel and his daughter Mikayla there, to share in the celebration of this prestigious award.

Tom has been a part of the New Zealand hire industry for nearly three decades, starting his journey in 1995 with McEntee Hire at the then Albany branch. Tom’s rise through the ranks at McEntee, was swift and moved from part time to full time, from general tasks to Branch Manager, to Area Manager, and eventually to National Operations Manager.  When Kennards Hire acquired McEntee in 2012, Tom played a pivotal role in ensuring a smooth transition, helping to consolidate branches and integrate staff into the Kennards family. His leadership during this period was instrumental in maintaining continuity and stability, which was vital for both the employees and customers.

Even back during his days with McEntee Hire, Tom was involved in attending HIANZ AGMs and zone meetings. After visiting the Hire and Rental Conference in Australia, he was inspired to become involved in helping HIANZ be the best it could be. When he was given the opportunity to join HIANZ as a board member in 2011, he jumped at the chance, motivated to enhance the value to members and promoting safety, showcases his dedication to the broader industry.

Tom’s input helped elevate standards and ensure a safer working environment for all, serving 6 continuous years on the board. His contributions to the association further underscore his commitment to the industry and his dedication to fostering a safer, more professional industry. This commitment is still on display today with Kennards offering support to the association team on many subject matters and governance.

It is these qualities that make Tom Kimber a deserving recipient of the lifetime membership award. His influence on the industry and the people within it is profound and lasting. Tom, your dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment have left an indelible mark on Kennards Hire and the equipment rental industry as a whole.

Ant Smit

Life Member Award 2024

At the Hire Excellence Awards Dinner at HIRECON24, Ant Smit from Hirepool was awarded Life Membership.

It was wonderful to have Ant’s son Henry and his partner Lucy attend, to share in the celebration of this distinguished award, as Rhianna was away overseas with work commitments. Ant started his career as a sailmaker before seeing the light by working for Carlton as a rigger. However, the big OE beckoned for Ant, and he ended up in Europe erecting marquees following the European Golf tour. When he moved back to NZ, Christchurch, he joined Hollobon Hire. Ant was there a long time with fellow Hirepool staff member Brendon Ross. Ant left Hollobon but when Hirequip purchased Hollobon in 1998, Ant came back into the fold to manage their combined events operations in the South Island. Ant moved from Events to take on a Regional Sales Management role on the general rental side of the company in 2004 and then the Regional Manager in 2007. He was instrumental in the merger of Hirequip and Hirepool in 2013 for the South Island.

In 2018 Ant relocated to Auckland to take on the Chief Operating Officer role for the company. In this role he manages all operations including sales, maintenance, H&S, and property for over 75 branches and 7 divisions.

Ant has always been an ardent supporter of the association through his time at Hirequip then Hirepool. In 2017, Ant took up a position on the HIANZ board and helped shape the new direction of the association and management team. Ant supported Rodney and Kylene through those turbulent times until Rodney could coax on a new President.

In 2020 when Tim decided it was time to step down, Ant stood up and took on the role of President and assisted the HIANZ team in the turmoil that was COVID times. Ant held the President position through our board transition and HIANZ value proposition adjustment before handing off to our current president Amy Gillies in 2022.

Thank you, Ant, for your work and time for the Association, the industry, and I am sure the Hirepool team are as grateful to have you steering their ship as we have been.
